Resource Abstract
Presented at the 2018 Bakken Production Optimization Program annual members meeting held August 7–8, 2018, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Produced gas from the Bakken has high amounts of ethane, propane, and other natural gas liquids, which need to be reduced to produce pipeline-quality natural gas. Gas processing leads to excess low-value rich-gas hydrocarbons (especially ethane). Reinjection of these components may provide benefits including enhanced oil recovery, gas storage, and reduced gas flaring. The Energy & Environmental Research Center is conducting laboratory studies to understand the potential for injected rich gas to mobilize crude oil hydrocarbons at reservoir conditions as well as determining sorption isotherms in Bakken rock samples in order to better understand the gas?rock matrix interactions that may control both oil production and gas storage.
