Resource Abstract
This progress report presents an overview of Bakken Production Optimization Program (BPOP) activities from July through September 2019. The BPOP Annual Meeting was held August 7–8, 2019, in Williston, North Dakota. BPOP activities in support of the rich gas enhanced oil recovery pilot were largely focused on field-based activities at the Leon–Gohrick drill spacing unit (DSU) in the Stomping Horse complex in Williams County, North Dakota. Large-scale injection testing was conducted in the Gohrick 4-MBH and Gohrick 6-TFH wells. Data from the two tracer studies were analyzed and interpreted. Isotherms from ambient to 5000 psi (345 bar) were successfully measured for methane, ethane, propane, and a mixture of those three gases on shales. Through collaboration with key industry partners, Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) staff obtained fluid samples for physical and chemical property determination and acquired existing compositional data to support the ongoing research efforts of individual BPOP tasks. Gas chromatography equipment, configured during the previous reporting period, has been used to perform new whole oil–crude fingerprinting analytical methods. These methods are being used to analyze existing crude and available core samples collected from within the Bakken in an attempt to determine oil origination and/or subsurface migration during production activities. Interpretations of parent–child well relationships and optimization calculations for the DSU and completion strategies continued. The findings were presented at the BPOP Annual Meeting. An EERC representative attended the North Dakota Petroleum Council meeting with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and spoke about the challenges and opportunities for small-scale wellsite gas utilization. An EERC representative attended the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission meeting and spoke about gas capture and factors influencing flaring in North Dakota.
