Resource Abstract
This progress report presents an overview of Bakken Production Optimization Program (BPOP) activities from October through December 2019. BPOP activities in support of the rich gas enhanced oil recovery pilot were largely focused on analysis and interpretation of data from the field-based activities. Data from the two tracer studies were analyzed and interpreted. Flow-through experiments were successfully conducted to examine the relative mobility and sorption characteristics of methane, ethane, and propane in shales. The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) convened a daylong workshop with BPOP partners to discuss optimization of surface facilities. Meeting content included an EERC presentation of prior work relevant to facility optimization, group discussion about operational challenges in North Dakota, development of project ideas that could help address those challenges, and a prioritization of topics by each partner. The EERC organized and facilitated discussion at the North Dakota Petroleum Council Technology Solutions Group Meeting, which focused on lightning protection technologies for oil and gas facilities. The EERC completed a comprehensive analysis of the impacts of operating conditions and environmental factors on tank vapors. A topical report entitled “Numerical Study of Headspace O2 Concentration in Bakken Oil Storage Tanks” has been posted to the BPOP website as a premium product available to partners. Analyses were conducted on Bakken- and Three Forks-derived water samples to implement a fingerprinting technique complementing the work done on crude samples. Interpretations of parent–child well relationships and optimization calculations for the drill spacing unit (DSU) and completion strategies continued. An algorithm was created to define unique DSUs for each well to improve the statistical analysis. Several machine learning techniques were used to identify important features related to oil production.
