Resource Abstract

This progress report presents an overview of Bakken Production Optimization Program (BPOP) activities from April through June 2021. Annual topical deliverables were submitted to the North Dakota Industrial Commission (NDIC). Analysis of lease operating expenses (LOEs) for Bakken wells and identifying opportunities to improve well economics were initiated. Capital costs and production expenses are the primary drivers regarding economical well performance. LOE data were compiled, and an initial evaluation of opportunities for cost reduction was performed. Improvements to oil and water-fingerprinting analytical techniques continued in an effort to discriminate samples produced from different reservoirs. The research team conducted several meetings with oil and gas operators and discussed opportunities for fingerprinting application in production monitoring and optimization. The EERC data analytics efforts focused on four activities: 1) refine and improve the previous well completion optimization calculations for the Bakken petroleum system (BPS), 2) analyze the top-performing wells in the BPS, 3) generate statistics of well shut-ins that occurred during the 2020 economic downturn, and 4) assess the impact of the 2020 Bakken production shut-ins on estimated ultimate oil recovery. Subcontracts were executed between the EERC; EOR ETC, LLC (EOR ETC); and Liberty Resources to accommodate the East Nesson Bakken enhanced oil recovery (EOR) pilot. Rich gas injection only and coinjection of rich gas and water were simulated using two independent history-matched models. The results were used to determine design parameters for the EOR pilot and support the development of NDIC Department of Mineral Resources underground injection control permit exhibits. The EOR ETC coinjection skid construction was initiated based on East Nesson pilot site design parameters.
