Studies of Well Completion Optimization and Best Operational Practices of the Bakken Petroleum System

Resource Abstract

The work presented in this Bakken Production Optimization Program (BPOP) report is a continuation of previous efforts led by the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) data analytics research team. The goals of the work are to 1) refine and improve upon previous well completion optimization calculations for the Bakken petroleum system (BPS) and 2) better understand the best operational practices that resulted in improved production performance or cost savings under the challenging business environment precipitated by the COVID-19 global pandemic. This report focuses on four main topics: 1) well completion optimization calculations within four geologic clusters of the BPS 2) analyses of the top-performing wells in the BPS, 3) assessment of well shut-ins that occurred during the 2020 economic downturn, and 4) impact on ultimate oil recovery of Bakken wells that were shut-in during 2020.
