Resource Abstract

This progress report presents an overview of Bakken Production Optimization Program (BPOP) activities from September 1 through December 31, 2021. Webinars entitled “Investigation of Bakken 3-mile Laterals” and “Completion Design Evolution for Saltwater Disposal Injection Wells in the Bakken Play” were presented to the BPOP partners. A model was created to capture and characterize irregular flow in producing wells. A preliminary draft report has been produced examining storage of flared gas in producing wells. Access to a Bakken petroleum system (BPS) well for the purpose of temporal fluid collection and analysis was provided by a BPOP partner to establish a data curve for the initial and long-term production characteristics and composition of the new well. Samples of core from the well were obtained by the EERC and subjected to processes for extracting in situ fluids from the pore space. A refracturing study was kicked off to update the EERC database of wells that have been refractured in the BPS in North Dakota since the last update in 2019. The Bakken geological cluster analysis tool was added to the BPOP partners-only website. A topical report entitled “Studies of Well Completion Optimization and Best Operational Practices of the Bakken Petroleum System” was finalized. The injection cycle of the Liberty Resources LLC pilot test was concluded after a month of injection into at the East Nesson pilot site. Continuous and periodic data collected as part of the reservoir surveillance program are being monitored, processed, and analyzed to evaluate the performance of the ongoing pilot test. A webinar entitled “Liberty Resources East Nesson Pilot Test Update” was presented twice to BPOP partners. The EERC conducted activities that used machine learning and big data analysis to address questions related to improving enhanced oil recovery operations and developing long-term strategies for overall Bakken resource development, which have been detailed in a topical report.
