Resource Abstract
This slide deck was presented to BPOP Members on February 28, 2024, as part of the EERC's ongoing BPOP webinar series. Sulfur isotopes were used to evaluate various mechanisms of souring in Bakken production. Samples of well-collected H2S demonstrated positive d34S values in the range from +1.7‰ to +22.5‰. The bacterial mechanism of souring was not supported by the reservoir condition, and laboratory tests indicated an absence of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the brine. The thermochemical sulfate reduction process was also not supported by the data because of the different sulfur isotope signatures in the anhydrite and produced H2S. The d34S in the H2S from producing wells matched the d34S of the H2S generated by the pyrolysis experiments of the Madison Formation, which overlies the Bakken reservoir.
