Resource Abstract

This presentation summarizes results from a recent natural gas liquids (NGL) huff-and-puff EOR pilot conducted in the Middle Bakken by Chord Energy in collaboration with the Energy & Environmental Research Center. The single-cycle pilot, executed in a single horizontal-well drilling spacing unit, delivered a very strong and sustained production response, with daily oil rates rising by up to 470% and cumulative oil production increasing by approximately 253% over a five-month postinjection period. Integrated analysis of field production data and laboratory measurements, including miscibility, swelling, molecular weight reduction, and detailed compositional trends, provides insight into the mechanisms controlling EOR performance. Results indicate that NGL injection drives sustained oil-phase compositional modification and mobilizes oil from fracture–matrix domains that were poorly drained during primary depletion. This study provides a strong technical foundation to inform the design and scale-up of future produced-gas and CO2-based EOR efforts in the Bakken.
